Week Twenty Eight

When we got back from Spring Break we had a new seating arrangement and new classroom jobs!

In Social Studies we started learning about culture through celebrations and traditions. We learned about each others traditions and started to look at Ukraine and its traditions and celebrations. We learned that in Ukraine, Easter is one of their biggest celebrations. There is a story called "The Bird's Gift" that explains how the tradition of making Pysanka came about. So on Friday morning we got to make our own versions of Pysanky!

We learned about some traditional instruments and dance in Ukraine, check out the Bandura:

We have combined Social Studies and Science and we have been learning about the different ways kids from all over the world get to school. We learned that in some places kids have a pretty long and dangerous route. We will be doing a design and building challenge to see if we can find a smart and safe way for these kids to get to school.

We have a new pencil system. Miss Klem and Miss Kolb had finally had just about enough of handing out nearly 100 pencils a week!!!!! So now we all have an assigned pencil that we have to use. The longer we use our one pencil the more opportunities we will have to earn tickets. We have proven this week, since we haven't lost a single pencil this week that we actually can care for materials appropriately and have been much less wasteful.

We had a bunch of math homework this week! In math we reviewed and continued to learn about decimals and a little bit of fractions as well as learning what the place values are for decimals. We had a mini math test to check-in with where we are at with what we have learned so far. We also learned how to add and subtract decimal numbers. We got to use shopping flyers to pick out items we would buy and add them up. Some of us tried to use a budget to see if we could stay in it. Over the weekend our homework is going to be to take our check-in home and fix up any errors we made.

We finished our lunch movie this week.

We had a couple birthdays over the break and when we got back! Happy birthday A, D, M & C!

We earned free choice this week! This week for our bonus opportunity we got to bring in board games from home to play with each other.

April 16th we start swimming! Yay!

Next week grade 4s will have Human Sexuality where they will learn more about their body. :)

We finished the movie Wonder and talked about the similarities and differences between the book and the movie. Turns out there was a lot of things that were different! Ask me about it!

In gym we have been using the scoops. We have been throwing balls in the air and catching it on our own and with partners. As an extra challenge we could try using two balls and catching them.

Parent/Teacher conferences are coming up! You will be able to book a time to meet with your teacher starting on Wednesday April 11th. Conferences will be on April 19 & 20th.

We have ICNR next week! Please return the Village Square library books so that we can get new ones.

We have been continuing to practice mindfulness in the classroom. We have noticed that it helps us to feel happy, calm, more relaxed, and ready to learn.

Until next week,

Love,

Room 7 & 8

    1. We have been talking in class about how a decimal point separates whole numbers from parts of numbers!

For example 5 is a whole number and 5.7 is 5 whole digits and 7 tenths of a digit. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting!
