Week 31

It was another busy week in Room 7 & 8, especially with the Celebration of Learning! We want to send out a big thank you to all of the families that attended to make the night really great! Check it out!

We finished our self portraits for the 40th Anniversary assembly. We did 3D paper art and they turned out very very cool! They will be posted around the gym when we have the assembly along with all of the other classes self portraits, we can't wait to see them!

We had a choir assembly and practiced for the Celebration of Learning on Monday. Then our actual Celebration of Learning was Thursday night. Some of the students from our classroom were in the assembly as MC's, choir singers and handbell players. It was very fun to have guests in our classroom and show off the great work we did around story writing.

It was so fun to have our families come into the classroom to see how hard we have been working and see how much we have been learning about story writing and publishing.

We loved getting feedback from our families and other teachers in the school! This is Mrs. Broadland checking out Brook's Aurasma video for her book.

Even Mr. Southworth came to check out our learning during the Celebration!

Next week is Mental Health Week. We made posters that we are going to have hanging in the hallways around the school to raise awareness about metal health. #GetLoud about mental health!

Next week on Wednesday you can wear a hat all day if you bring in a money or non-perishable food item that will be donated to a charity dedicated to supporting mental health.

Today we earned free choice. Woo Hoo!

This week we had Roots of Empathy. We switched things up due to Roots and we had Free writing on Tuesday instead of Friday!

We continued to look at fairytales this week. We are studying the difference between the modern versions and traditional versions of Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Little Red Riding Hood. A question we have is, "Why do you think fairytales have changed?" We have had some really interesting conversations about how these differences are connected to history and how children and society has changed over time. We are in small groups reading the versions together figuring out the differences as we read. Next we will present our findings to the class.

In math we learned more about the vocabulary around multiplication and division. We learned about the dividend, divisor, quotient, factors, and product. Ask me which word goes with which numbers in a multiplication problem and division problem. We also learned about fact families, this means that you can have 2 multiplication and 2 division questions using just 3 numbers. Ask me to show you!

Just in case you have been wondering Pet Wet is still alive and mostly well with only some evaporation but we make sure to replenish him.

Until next time,

Love,

Week 30

Next week, on Thursday night, is our Convention Of Learning. We have been working hard to get ready to have guests in the classroom to share our learning with! We have been taking on the role of author and illustrator by creating our very own stories, some of which you might have read at parent teacher conferences. Together we have gone through the process of character and plot development and we are inviting you to join us for “Author’s Chair.” An event in which our young writers wish to share their final products with an audience. We have revised, edited and published our work based on constructive peer and teacher feedback and now we would like to share our process with you and receive your feedback! We are always looking to continue to develop our skills in writing and as we move into learning about and writing our own fairytales. We look forward to reading to you! We have also added in some technology pieces that are really cool! First we had to write an advertisement for our books, kind of like a summary. Then we got iPads and filmed each others ads. Next, Mrs. Craig came into the classroom to give us a crash course on how to use Aurasma, an app on the iPads. With this app, when you put your device like an iPad or a cell phone over a trigger picture then a video pops up! It's really neat and we can't wait to show you how it works next Thursday!

Some of us even used some props to jazz up our videos! Don't we look great?

We had a fire drill this week. We did a great job of following our emergency procedures and exiting the school quickly and quietly. Way to go room 7/8!

We had a Roots of Empathy baby visit this week. Our babies sure are getting big and strong!

We had two birthdays on Monday! Happy Birthday A & F!!

In gym we are learning about skipping. We had an assembly about Jump Rope for Heart, ask me what this organization does and how I can help. One of our very own was in the assembly and did an awesome jump rope routine! It was so cool!

We continued to work on our self portraits. We got into the paint this week and started to paint lines onto our portraits that express ourselves and our personalities.

We learned a new strategy for division called repeated subtraction. Ask me to solve this problem using our new strategy.

20 divided by 4 = ______

On Wednesday we got to play Focus because we were all here and we had a super good classroom clean up.

Room 7 also went outside for buddy reading while Room 8 was in music singing their hearts out.

Until next week,

Love,

Week Twenty Nine

Mr. Collins was at the pool all week this week and so we had Mrs. Craig in the gym with us. We continued to work on our skills in soccer and learned how to play Wall Ball and some other fun soccer skill games.

We had three dance parties this week because we had everyone come to school!

We started a really cool art project for the 40th anniversary of our school. We were inspired by an art project Ms. Kolb has done before, they will be fantastic when they are all done!

We had our buddies come in this week and we shared our original stories with them.

This week we compared the differences between the original Little Mermaid and the Disney version of The Little Mermaid. We are learning about fairy tales and how they have changed over time. We discovered that the original Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen is VERY different from the Disney version. Ask me about some of the differences.

For the Eat Well Play Well Challenge we got second in the school! We have a certificate hanging in the classroom.

This week we got to pick a famous Albertan and do research on them. We had to research when and where they were born and what their job was. Then we had to present our research to the class. Some of the presentations were very funny. We did a great job with our research and we were very brave in our sharing to each other. Ask me who I researched and what I learned about them!

Some of us, who are in choir got to go to the Jubilee with Ms. Gunderson to present some songs. They had a great time!

In math we started division. Ask me about what strategy we learned for dividing numbers evenly.

We are more than half-way through and almost finished The Hobbit. Ask me what has been happening on Bilbo's adventure!

It is SNOWING today! It is wild, and we can't believe it!

We have a long weekend coming up, there is no school this Friday or Monday because it is Easter. Happy Easter and have a happy Good Friday!

Please comment on the blog! We love comments!

Until next time,

Love,
