Week Twenty Three

This week we learned about "self-talk." We learned the difference between negative self talk and positive self talk and how it can help us. Ask me to tell you about positive self talk and demonstrate it for you!

We had buddies this week and we helped our little buddies write in their journals about what they like about themselves. We read a book called "I Like Myself." This was a good opportunity for us to teach them what we learned about self-talk.

We had THREE birthdays this week!!! Wowza! Happy Birthday to J, J & E!! Our buddy teacher Ms. Schulhof had a birthday this week too! Happy Birthday!

We continued working on a word hunt using the thesaurus. Our vocabularies are really beginning to blossom!!

We had a really good two days with our guest teachers while Ms. Kolb and Ms. Klem were away! We definitely earned free choice this week and we are thrilled about it!

We did have a bit of a hiccup at lunch on Wednesday but after some reflection we made sure lunch on Thursday went much better for everyone!

We had fun lunch on Wednesday, yummy! :)

We read a book called "Journey" - it had NO WORDS!! It was just pictures and we stopped part of the way through and had to write our own ending to the story!

In Social Studies this week we finished researching the countries and adding the information to our graphic organizers. We started a compare and contrast activity that we will finish next week!

In math we learned about re-grouping! We have been using the base 10 blocks to work through subtraction questions and worked with numbers into the thousands!

Next week will be a busy week! Not only is it the last week of February already but we have Mission Impossible in the gym, it's Mr. Collin's birthday next week AND it will be pink shirt day on Wednesday February 28th. To prepare for Mission Impossible we got lots of safety instructions about how to use the climber properly. Ask me what some of the safety rules are.

The grade 3's wrote the blog today because the grade 4's were working on a survey about school on the computers.

We got a new/ returning student this week! Welcome back A!

Until next week,

Love,

Room 7 & 8

Week Twenty Two

Friendly February is in full swing! At the end of the month it is Pink Shirt Day, don't forget to find your favourite pink shirt to show off! On Monday we did not have a very successful lunch hour. We are still working on showing respectful behaviour and listening. Mr. Southworth had to come in and have a discussion with us about school expectations. This was a pretty disappointing moment for us as we had spent the entire morning together talking about the difference between rude, mean and bullying and had come up with some really good talking points together. It is clear that we know what our expectations are and now we are to show it more regularly.

This week we worked more on our stories. Most of us are in the final stages of writing. Next week we will hopefully get a chance to start typing them out on the computers and making an illustration plan for our good copies. The stories are turning out really good and using a thesaurus has been a lot of fun and has added some exciting new vocabulary words to our work.

To get better at using the thesaurus we did some word work and did a thesaurus word hunt! Ask me some of the alternative words you can use for "happy" and "sad."

Ms. Engel came in this week during math and gave us some mystery problems to solve. She gave us the answer and we had to find out how many questions you could use to get to that number.  Try some of these at home!

_____ - _____ =  7

_____ - _____ = 19

______ - _____ =  41

______ - ______ = 263

Comment some possible questions to the answers in the comments section!

On Tuesday in math we got some word problems to solve. They were similar to the questions we worked on with Ms. Engel in that a lot of the word problems had a ton of different possibilities for answers! Try out this one!

Miss Kolb is having a party at her fabulous apartment. She is inviting teachers, dogs, and snakes to her party. There are 48 legs at her party. What combinations of teachers, dogs and snakes could be at the party?

Today is Valentine's Day. Miss Kolb and Miss Klem brought in brown paper bags, stamps and stickers so we could make ourselves a valentine envelope to keep any notes or cards of kindness in them that we got from friends and travel with them safely home! Our student teacher Ms. Soriano read us a story called "Love" for Valentine's Day.

Next week we have a Pizza Fun Lunch on Wednesday the 21st! You can still place your orders here:

You have until this Friday to order if you would like to have pizza for lunch.

We had ICNR today! This means I got new books from the Village Square Library. Read them with me!

We had a friend bring in a model of the Titanic that he made. It had almost 1000 pieces! He got it for his birthday and shared his hard work with us. It must have taken a lot of dedication and patience to build something so complex!

We did a really cool multi-media art project yesterday! We got to use magazines and book covers. We took words and pictures out of them to create a picture that had positive and kind words on it to display in a mural in the hallway for everyone to see and remember that they are wonderful! It looks incredible!

The weather was positively wonderful on Tuesday. We couldn't believe it! We had the opportunity to earn a bonus recess. We worked hard all day on Tuesday and in the afternoon we got to go outside and enjoy the sunshine!

In gym we have been working on gymnastics skills. We were working on balancing using the benches. We played games like champion challenger and crossover, that one was tricky!

Friendly reminder: There is no school on Thursday, Friday or Monday, we will see your bright and shiny faces again on Tuesday February 20th!

Miss Klem and Miss Kolb will be away on Wednesday the 21st and Thursday the 22nd. They will be at a conference and are expecting that Room 7 & 8 is outstanding for the guest teachers that join them for those two days. Please be helpful and show them how wonderful you all are!

Until next week,

Love,

Room 7 & 8
