Week Thirty Five

We went on a field trip to the Children's Festival and it was so fun! While we were at the field trip we went to a show, we watched a show that was about the First Nations culture. We watched a group of First Nations from British Columbia and they told stories through singing and dancing. One of the dances was about the Thunder Bird. We learned about this legend earlier this week, it is about how thunder and lightening came to be. It is about an angry bird and when the bird gets really mad she flaps her wings to make thunder sounds and shoots lightening out of her eyes! Some of the other dances were about killer whales and the leader of the groups son who was born early and who they called the little copper boy because when he came early his finger nails were a coppery colour. They had carved many beautiful masks and used them in their dances. Our favourite character was the Raven because he stole things from the audience! They also taught us a word from their language it was "am" it means "very well" so if someone asked you how you were you could say "am"

Some of us waited in the insanely long line for some face paint! They turned out really cool! There was a Shaw tent at the festival that had a game and you could win prizes, a lot of us won some! The prizes we could have won were a frisbee, a beach ball and popcorn! At the field trip there were also lots of stations and tents you could go to like a craft station, a lego station, and a puppet making station, an egg station, and there was also a tooth brushing station to help us learn about healthy and proper teeth care. There was also a station where an artist was sketching faces, a friend even got his done! The field trip was so exciting and exhausting that some of us even fell asleep on the bus ride home. We made it back just in time for the dismissal bell!

There were lots of interesting characters around the festival such as clowns, a very tall violin playing woman and a tall bird dancing around. The clowns were pretending to be extremely talented artists but they drew us as odd things like a unicorn, a fork, or a loaf of bread....

Getting picked up from the festival took a very long time, there were hundreds and hundreds of kids!! But we will had a great time, it was such a great day at the Children's Festival!

In social studies we are learning about all of the different ways you can tell stories. This connects really well with our fairy tale writing too! We have made our very own talking stick to use for important class meetings and sharing of stories and we have also started to work on some cave art, inspired by our First Nations and cavemen. We did however have some trouble with the spray bottle and Miss Kolb will have to go get a different one that actually works so our cave art will continue next week, amazing pictures to come!

We had a birthday this week, Happy Birthday B!

This week, unfortunately, we had a rough time being respectful listeners and doing our jobs in the lunch room. Some of us earned free choice this week and some of us were busy writing apology letters instead.

When we got back from our long weekend we saw that some of our plants had started to sprout and grow! One of our friends plants has already become a seedling! Very exciting stuff!

We started weeding the naturalization area so that we can start planting in there next week! Room 7 got rained out by that wicked storm and ended up having a plant scavenger hunt in the school. Some of us found over 60 plants hiding around CJFS!

We even had to save some of Ms. Greaves plants from the rain and wind storm too!

In gym we continued to play lacrosse and also practicing throwing a football. We got lots of passing done.

Please comment! :)

Until next time,

Love,
