Week 20

This week marks our half way point in the year together! We have been working hard so far this year and still have lots of amazing work to do in the next 20 weeks! You'll never guess what happened either, our SMARTboard had it's last flickers and has since been declared deceased... Now we have a projector set up that we will use until something new can be installed. What an adventure Room 7&8 continues to prove itself to be!

This week in Gym we used the scooters. We learned to scoot on our bottoms and in the superman/ super girl positions! We are going to be starting gymnastics in gym next week. This means, if you have hair longer than your shoulders you need to tie it back. Also, please leave all jewelry at home.

In math we practiced some more strategies for addition. We practiced lining up, base 10 blocks, using a place value chart and using what we know of expanded form to break numbers apart and find friendly combinations.

We had two birthdays this week!! Happy Birthday H & K!!

Today is Groundhog Day! This means that when the groundhog comes out of its hole, if it sees its shadow, it gets scared and goes back into his hole meaning winter will go on for a little longer! If the groundhog does not see his shadow, it means spring will come early!

We have a field trip next week! We will be going to the Jack Singer Concert Hall to learn more about the orchestra and the instrument families within it.

On Monday we have our last visit with the Artist. We will be working with her in the afternoon to get one step closer to completing our masks - they are really turning out to be incredible!

Next week Scholastic orders are due on Thursday February 8th if you are interested in placing an order.

We graphed the results of our popcorn bag challenge using a bar graph. The winning bag that used the most effective design held 495 pieces of popcorn! WOWZA!

We finished our lunch movie "Sing" this week and started "Wreck-it-Ralph"

We have been working very hard on our stories this week. Most of us have completed our story plans and character lists and have begun our rough drafts. Some of us are already on our second draft as well. We have really been talking a lot about interesting ways to begin our stories and how we can add details and descriptive words into our stories so that our readers can picture our characters and settings in their minds!

In Social Studies we have been learning about India, Tunisia, Ukraine and Peru. We have been mapping and using Atlases, globes and the internet to research information about these countries. We are going to be doing a compare and contrast of these countries to see what is similar about them as well as what is different. We have also been learning the difference between what a continent is and a country. We have discovered that the 5 countries we are looking at are all on different continents!

We are continuing to read through Wonder and it has been interesting to read through the different characters perspectives. We had a special guest reader come in this week and it was Mr. Robinson! He has not read this book before so it was nice to share with him what has happened so far (Mr. Southworth and Mr. Robinson are in a bit of a battle about who gets to read with us! They get jealous when the other one reads, so we are trying to be fair and let them read the same amount. We love having them in the classroom!).

We did not earn free choice this week. Instead we had to catch up on a lot of missed class time due to the amount of class meetings we had to have about expected behaviours and showing respect towards others.

Until next week,

Love,

Room 7 & 8
