The Teachers in Room 7 & 8 and Classroom Expectations

 Dear Parents/Guardians and Students in Room 7 & 8,

Welcome to the 2017/18 school year! Our names are Miss Kolb and Miss Klem and we are thrilled to be your child’s grade 3/4 teachers this year! Miss Kolb has degrees in Psychology, History as well as Education with a specialization in Inclusion. She enjoys watching movies, singing, reading and adventuring! Miss Klem has a degree in Education with a major in Elementary Education and minors in Physical Education and Teaching English as a Second Language. She likes to do yoga, ride her bike, go to the mountains, and cook. We both love art and learning about the fascinating world we live in!

We are looking forward to a very exciting year with the many opportunities that will be available to our school.  Our classroom is part of the Grade 3/4 team and we will be planning together with the other teachers in Grade 3/4: Ms. Shustack, Miss Macleod, Mrs. McLellan, Ms. Greaves and Mrs. Dryden to ensure that all students have rich and diverse learning opportunities.

After two months of summer holidays, your child is probably anxious to get back to school.  However, it will take a little while to get used to the long school day again.  You can help by ensuring that your child gets lots of sleep, eats a good breakfast, packs a healthy lunch, and brings a nutritious snack so that they have the energy to make it through the day.

The following information answers some commonly asked questions and suggests ways which you as a parent can support our program:

Personal Belongings:
To come to school: Please feel free to send a labeled water bottle, filled with water, to school with your child so they can stay hydrated and focused. Indoor shoes that your child can put on independently are also required so that our school remains nice and clean. Please ensure indoor shoes are comfortable and can be worn in the gym for daily physical activity.

To stay at home: Toys, fidget tools that have not been previously discussed with the teacher about, specialty (gels, metallic) pens and other personal belongings should not be brought to school. They are a distraction and their safety cannot be guaranteed.  All necessary supplies are provided so all other crayons, pens and pencils will remain at home.

Behavioural Expectations:  We believe that it is important to have a safe and caring learning environment in which all children feel that they can learn. We will be working to achieve this throughout the year.

Snacks:  We encourage children to have healthy snacks for our nutrition breaks.  We also discourage the children from sharing snacks for the safety of all of our students. There will be an opportunity to have a snack at recess as well as an afternoon nutrition break.

Agenda: Your child will bring home an agenda each day that will share any notices and important information (teacher communication, field trips etc.) about your child’s learning. Please take the time to check your child’s agenda each night and sign that you have read it.

Homework: Formal homework will not be assigned this year in room 7/8. Your child will be working hard at school during the day and is encouraged to enjoy time outside and with family after school. Please do take the time to read each night with your child for 15-20 minutes. Any other homework that your child brings home will consist of work they did not complete during the class time given or will be in the agenda.

Volunteering: We love volunteers! Volunteer opportunities include reading with children, preparing activities for students, or helping with class projects, and joining us on field trips. If you would like to volunteer this year, please be sure to complete the Volunteer Registration Form and visit the office to receive a letter, which is needed when completing the Police Security Check online. The Calgary Board of Education requires these forms before volunteering can take place.

School Attendance and Times:
School starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday.  On Friday we start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 11:50 a.m. Please ensure your child is on time for school.  This helps children begin each day ready to learn.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us by phone at 403-777-6710 ext. 3007 or ext. 3008 before classes start in the morning, at lunch or after school and we can arrange a time to talk or meet in person. You can also contact us through e-mail at bekolb@cbe.ab.ca and deklem@cbe.ab.ca

There will also be weekly updates on our classroom blog, and our school website. Please check these regularly to ensure you are up to date with your child’s learning and are “in the know” about coming events at our school. Our classroom blog can be found at kolbandklem.blogspot.ca

We look forward to working with you and your child, and meeting with you at Parent Teacher Conferences on October 5th and 6th

Sincerely,

Miss. Kolb & Miss. Klem

Week 40 - The Last Week!

We can hardly believe the year has already come to an end!

Today is the last day of school. :(

Today we had the farewell assembly for the teachers and students that will be leaving next year. We finally got to give Ms. Paull the surprise we painted for her!

We had our final test of the year this week. It was a test in math about decimals. Some of us are very serious test takers. We did a really good job!

Parent Council popped us some popcorn on the school's new popcorn machine. It smelled and tasted so delicious!

Yesterday for our last gym class we got to play dodge ball!

In Social we talked about what we think Canada will be like on it's 200th anniversary. We wrote about what Canada was like on its 150th Birthday (this year) and then took guesses about what we think will change in the next 50 years.. we also figured out that we will be around 60 years old when Canada turns 200.

For Science we tested our vehicles that move without us having to push them. It was super exciting when they moved!

In writing we shared our final copies of our fairy tales and art with each other. It was really fun to hear how everyone included all of the elements.

We also had our final prize draw of the year. We drew out tickets until all of the prizes were gone!

Next school year starts on September 5th! We will see you all then!

Have a wonderful and safe summer holiday, we will miss you!

Love,

Room 7 & 8

Week Thirty Nine

This was our last full week of school for this year! We are still keeping it jam packed with learning and experimenting! Check out Room 7 & 8's adventures from this week:

We did our maker challenge this week in Science. We made cars that move without having to be pushed. We researched how to make either an elastic car or a balloon car. We will be testing our creations on Monday!

We finally finished the Hobbit! What an adventure Bilbo went on! Ask me what happened in the book!

Speaking of books... we had to start organizing our classroom library and our leveled books. It was a huge job and we want to give a big thank you to our friends who stayed in a couple recesses to help us organize!

In gym we played Lady GaGa ball again. If you didn't want to play this game you could use the hula hoops or a skipping rope.

It was the Grade 6's farewell assembly this week. We were invited and got to watch all the grade 6's cross the stage. The grade 5's also sang "See You Again" it was very touching!

Room 8 got to read outside this week and play on the playground when Room 7 was in music (don't worry Room 7 we will go outside on Monday!) :)

Even Miss Klem joined in on the fun!

In Social we learned about confederation and Alberta's French heritage. Last week on June 14 the Franco-Albertan flag became an official emblem of Alberta. Pretty cool that this happened the same year Canada turns 150!

In Math we started to learn about decimals. We even got some homework this week as extra practice. We had to add and subtract decimals. This was good practice for us to remember our strategies for addition and subtraction. We played a game called "Guess the Decimal!" where we worked with a partner and we had to draw decimals in pictures and our partner had to figure out what the decimal was.

Next week is our last week of school! We are done on Wednesday June 28. It is a half day.

Until next time,

Love,

Room 7 & 8

Week 38

We are almost finished the Hobbit (at long last!)!

We did lots of art this week. We worked on canvases with white glue and water colours and we also worked on our art work for our fairytales. We used oil pastels and baby oil to blend.

This week in math we did fractions and then had a test in fractions. Next week we will be learning about decimals.

We had two lock down practices this week. We did really well.

In health this week the grade 4's were learning about human sexuality and in grade 3 we were learning about healthy active living and hygiene.

In social studies we talked about National Parks, tourist attractions and researched about Dinosaurs that used to live in Alberta. We also learned about the very strict rules about finding fossils. Alberta has some of the strictest fossil rules in the entire world. The law is that if you do not report any fossils you find you can get a $50,000.00 fine and/or you could be sentenced to prison for 1 year.

There is only 7 and 1/2 days left of grade 3/4!! We can hardly believe this year is already coming to an end! It feels like its been so short! Time flies when you're having fun! We are even starting to dress alike after spending so much time together! Aren't we stylish?

In gym we got to practice bowling! It was so much fun! We also practiced golf skills.

Check out this "good luck" wiggle:

This week we earned free choice and Miss Kolb and Miss Klem have been on the look out for respectful behaviour so that they can hand out extra tickets for the big end of the year prize draw we will be having on the last day of school! :)

Have a great weekend!

Until next time,

Love,

Room 7 & 8
