Week 9

This week we investigated pumpkins! We measured the circumference of our pumpkins, we estimated how many ribs and seeds they would have, then counted them. We also tested whether or not pumpkins float! We discovered that all pumpkins float, even if they are 20 pounds or more! The splash zone was a popular seat! By recess we were soaked but had learned a new interesting fact! Then on Tuesday we opened up our pumpkins and we got to see what was inside. Some of the pumpkins had over 700 seeds in them! It got pretty messy! We found that the pumpkin with the greatest amount of seeds had 740 and the pumpkin with the least amount of seeds had 106. We used lots of smart strategies for adding up such large numbers of seeds. We found that one of the most efficient ways to count them was by 10's.

Over the weekend Miss Klem is going to roast all of the seeds there are 4,385 in total!!! That's a big job! Then next week we are going to try them for a snack, mmmm!

In math we started talking about greatest, least and ordering. We ordered all of us from tallest to shortest! This turned out to be quite the task for us but we eventually got it done! After that we looked at all of the numbers of seeds we got from our pumpkins. Then we ordered the amounts from greatest to least and least to greatest.

We continued to do some of the skip counting math centers and we have almost gone through them all. Next week we are going to see how much we know about numbers before we start getting into addition and subtraction to see what we already know about numbers and what we are going to learn more about.

It was Halloween this week! We absolutely spoiled our teachers (and their teeth...) rotten! We gave them so much candy from our trick-or-treating! We got to wear costumes this year and it was fun to see what everyone who celebrates Halloween was going to dress up as. On Halloween the people who ordered a snack got to have a popcorn snack. Thank you to the parent council for organizing this for us! yummmmmmmy!

Happy Halloween from Prince Rupert, The Big Bad Dragon and The Paper Bag Princess!

Ms Luzzi looked particularly spooky!

A "Kolbzilla" was spotted in the gym!

We had a scientist, more specifically a geologist, come into the school this week to learn more about rocks with us. We went to a bunch of different stations and reviewed some of the stuff we already knew and learned some more things about rocks and minerals. We will be having a science test next week about rocks and minerals.

Friday morning we got to use computers to research rocks and minerals. We worked in a pair or a group of 3 and we got "specimens" to research. We got to look and hold the rock or mineral we were given and then researched if it was a rock or mineral, what it is used for, where it can be found and add interesting facts about it.

In gym we started catching and throwing and we were juggling!

We made some incredibly beautiful art this week using felt to make flowers and sticks to make peace symbols. We are making them for Remembrance Day. We learned about different types of poems last week and this week we used those formats to write and type poems about what peace means to us to share at the assembly next week.

Today is Free Choice Friday and most of us earned it again! Yay! We have now added a free choice chart in our classroom. How it works is all of our names are on the board. When we are being really helpful or are setting a really good example for our classmates we get a star beside our name. When we get to three stars we get to use technology for free choice or we can go to the Learning Commons to play there if we want. If we make irresponsible choices then we get a minus sign beside our name. Each minus is worth 5 minutes to talk to a teacher about making different choices. If you get 4 minuses you lose out on free choice and have a meeting with the teachers about making a plan to make more responsible and respectful choices for next week.

We are going on a field trip to the Village Square Library next week on Wednesday November 8. We will be gone in the afternoon.

It snowed a lot this week so we had inside recess on Friday. Now that the weather is changing please remember to dress for the weather! That means winter coats, mittens, snow pants, hats and boots! Runners just won't cut it!

Continue reading over the weekend! Here's a link to TumbleBooks you can use at home:
